Mr. Ocholo Bedecho - Arsosala - Guji

Naturally Processed - Heirloom Varietals - 2200-2300 MASL

Sweet & Snappy with Notes of Milk Chocolate, Fresh Strawberry and Floral Jasmine

Roast: Light - Medium

Inspiration: “Only when our clever brain and our human heart work together in harmony can we achieve our true potential." - Jane Goodall

Mr Ocholo Bedecho owns 8 hectares of coffee land in Oromia Regional State Guji Zone, Urga district. His farm is located 12 km from small town called Haro Wachu. Most of his income comes from his coffee farm although he also processes some vegetables and Enset (false banana) for daily food from his back yard/garden. He owns 8 hectares of land.

His land size is one of the largest lands in size by the standards of the district he lives. Mr Ocholo is the father of two daughters and 6 sons and the family work on the farm full time. Through coffee, he has managed to send all his children to school although they help in the farm after school when they can.

As a region, Guji is a beautifully forested area in southern Ethiopia. Before the early 2000's, this region was considered part of Sidama, but has since become its own region. The people of Guji grow coffee gardens at very high altitudes in the rich red soil of the highlands, setting this coffee's profile apart from neighboring regions. These smallholders deliver their coffee to washing stations to be sorted and processed together, developing flavors of fruits, deep chocolate, and light florals.

This particular micro-lot represents our fourth season of buying a single farmer lot from our producer network in Ethiopia. In the words of our partners at Cafe Imports:

The Single Farmer Project is the result of an effort to support Ethiopian producers with a marketplace for farm-traceable coffees. Back in 2012, during a turbulent time in Ethiopia's coffee exporting history, Partner and CEO Jason Long worked with an established cooperative to export some of the first ever truly “Farm Traceable” lots from Ethiopia. This was the first time a roaster could highlight the individual farmer for their Ethiopian Coffee. It was the start of an incredible project and truly began the movement for traceability in Ethiopia as we see more often today. This project also gave us some very fun stories like literally bringing a backpack full of Ethiopian Birr to Yirgacheffe with COO Noah Namowicz to pay the premiums directly to these farmers who participated.

This project is made possible in conjunction with important export partners supporting and bringing to market individual farmer lots. Samples are sent out to potential buyers, price is negotiated on the farmers' behalf, and contracts are only accepted when the producer agrees on a sales price and their name is on the contract for each coffee they sell.

“Our goals with this project would be to help garner and develop long-term relationships between the producers we are already working with and coffee roasting companies that share in the values of transparency, traceability, and relationship that this program represents," says Claudia, green-coffee buyer for Cafe Imports.

This exquisite micro-lot is sweet & snappy and makes for an excellent and clean pour-over or served neat as a single origin espresso.

Cooperativa Brisas del Pelón (CABRIPEL) - La Estanzuela, Marcala

Washed Field Blend - IH90, Lempira & Catuai - 1450 MASL

Crowd Pleasing & Daily Drinking with notes of Chocolate Malt, Heath Bar & Sugar Plum

Roast: Medium Dark

Inspiration: “I only went out for a walk, and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” - John Muir

To lend an analogy, in the great state of Minnesota there is one beer so beloved, so ubiquitous and so crowd pleasing that even if you were to live under a rock, chances are you’re likely to have stumbled upon it; we are of course referring to Castle Danger Cream Ale. What’s that have to do with coffee you might ask? Well, we think this is the coffee equivalent. Not only is it our best selling bean, but it also makes up the backbone of our Sundial Espresso blend.

A powerhouse in coffee cultivation, Honduras ranks as the fifth-largest coffee producer worldwide. Since the early 2000s, the Honduran coffee industry has stood out in Central America by specializing in fair trade, organic, and specialty coffees. The country’s fertile soil, diverse microclimates, and ideal terrain create the perfect conditions for cultivating high-quality beans and producing a wide variety of unique coffees. In 1991, the CABRIPEL cooperative was established in La Estanzuela, a small town within Honduras’s renowned Marcala coffee region. Today, the cooperative consists of 54 small-scale producers.

By working together, CABRIPEL members have successfully entered the Fair Trade and Organic certification markets, gaining significant international recognition. The cooperative’s structure relies on well-organized committees, which help optimize shared resources and deliver greater benefits to all members. Their coffee grows alongside crops like orange, avocado, lime, and banana trees, as well as other tall plants. These shade-providing plants protect coffee trees and the soil from harsh rains while maintaining essential shade. This agroforestry system not only preserves soil fertility for future harvests but also yields additional food sources for the farmers and their families. Through these practices, CABRIPEL exemplifies a sustainable model for coffee farming, balancing ecological responsibility with community well-being.

Composed of IH90, Lempira & Catuai, this community lot works as a great ‘daily driver’ that lends consistency cup in and cup out. Roasted ‘Full City’ or medium-dark (by our metrics), this coffee lends round notes of Chocolate Malt, Heath Bar & Sugar Plum.

Bunum Wo Estate - Jiwaka, Western Highlands

Washed - Typica Peaberry

1550 - 1600 MASL

A Balanced and Full Bodied Brew with Notes of Dark Chocolate, Huckleberry Syrup and English Toffee

Inspiration: “There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.” - Ernest Hemingway

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, people of the world — we are pleased to announce this season’s dark roast offering from our new friends at Benchmark Coffee & Bunum Wo Estate. Situated in the Western Highlands of Papua New Guinea, Bunum Wo is cultivated at an elevation of 1500 MASL where the estate values and prioritizes soil health and water conservation above all else. Certified bird-friendly, the Bunum Wo employs a medium-density shade strategy with two types of shade trees, ensuring even ripening of coffee cherries while also supporting habitats for over 90 bird species.

Undergoing a meticulous washing process that starts with hand-picking and sorting, prized peaberries are separated from the lot due to their delightful balance of sugar and acidity. Once sorted, the coffee is depulped and spends three days in fermentation with washing taking place every 24 hours, followed by an additional day of total water immersion before sun drying for an additional 21 days on raised beds. Once conditioned, the coffee undergoes multiple quality steps including destoning, milling, grading denso-metric sorting, color sorting and finally another round of hand sorting. Trust us when we say, the juice is worth the squeeze!

This stellar single estate peaberry is big and bold with low acid & a rich rustic sweetness that is clean enough to enjoy black, but also plays well with dairy and dairy alternatives. All in all, an excellent choice for those looking for a traditional yet nuanced dark roast.
